SPORTS MEDICINE
ATHLETIC TRAINING
Our athletic trainers at Scarborough High School are committed healthcare professionals specializing in preventing, evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating injuries. They collaborate with coaches, athletes, and medical experts to safeguard the health of our student-athletes on and off the field. From preventive measures to prompt treatment in emergent, acute and chronic injuries and recovery our athletic trainers are pivotal in enhancing our athletes’ well-being and performance. They also foster a culture of respect and sportsmanship within our athletic programs, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all involved.
To practice as an athletic trainer in Maine, a master’s degree from a CAATE-accredited program is required. Those “grandfathered” need at least a Bachelor’s degree, while new graduates must have a Master’s. Passing the BOC exam for national certification is mandatory. State licensure via the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation is also essential, involving the Maine Athletic Trainer Jurisprudence Examination. Licensed athletic trainers are tasked with providing comprehensive care to athletes, including evaluations, injury treatment, prevention programs, and educating on sports safety. They work in diverse settings like schools, clinics, and sports organizations, collaborating for optimal patient health and performance.
